Gatchina is a very unusual imperial suburban residence. The palace looks absolutely different from others, it’s not faced with colored plaster but with natural local stone. It looks more like French and Swiss hunting castle. Originally it was a gift from Catherine the Great to her favorite Grigory Orlov who helped her to become the empress. After his death it passed to her son Paul I. He spent many years here and he loved this place despite the fact that Orlov was one of his father’s killers. It’s quite a brutal manlike residence with a good collection of armaments and a real underground passageway.
