If you don’t have much time in Saint-Petersburg but you want to see as much as you can it’s a good solution. You can explore 3 suburbs in 1 day. All 3 of them are connected with the 18 century and situated nearby. Technically it’s possible to see all 3, but it will a bit in a hurry.
Tsarskoe Selo was the residence of Peter’s wife Catherine I, then their daughter Elizabeth and later Catherine the Great. Here you can compare tastes of different impresses and admire famous Amber room and majestic rooms decorated with gold and mirrors.
Pavlovsk was a family summer residence of Catherine the Great’s son Paul I. The palace is constructed in classical style and surrounded by a giant English-style park with a total area of 1500 acres. The palace interiors are the best preserved in suburbs, there are a lot of original furniture and belongings, all of them were saved in evacuation during the WWII.
Gatchina palace looks more like French and Swiss hunting castle. Originally it was a gift from Catherine the Great to her favorite Grigory Orlov who helped her to become the empress. After his death it passed to her son Paul I. He spent many years here and he loved this place despite the fact that Orlov was one of his father’s killers. It’s quite a brutal manlike residence with a good collection of armaments and a real underground passageway.
